The 25-year-old has now released his second piano recital "French Album". On the new CD, Tokarev spans the arc between the French Baroque era and modern-day classical French music. The recital opens with Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764). Tokarev plays one of his richly ornamented suites. The grace and technique of the "Prélude, variation et fugue“ op. 18 composed for organ in 1852 by the French Romantic composer César Franck, played by Tokarev in a piano adaptation, reflects the influence of Johann Sebastian Bach. The tone poet Debussy is revealed clearly in his "Clair de lune" from the "Suite bergamasque" (1890-1905), while Ravel is represented by his intimate "Pavane pour une infante défunte" and by his piano cycle "Gaspard de la nuit", which forms the focus to Tokarev's second CD recording, being one of the most technically demanding in the piano repertoire.

  • Tokarev demonstrated immense stylistic range on his debut CD:
With Chopin’s 2nd piano sonate and Schubert’s six "Moments Musicaux", Tokarev is highlighting his ability to strike a huge dramatic note. Besides virtuoso pieces such as Liszt’s "Campanella" and a Bach prelude adapted by Alexander Siloti, the CD also includes two first recordings: Mussorgsky’s "Nacht auf dem kahlen Berge" (Night on a bleak mountain) in the piano version by Russian composer/pianist Igor Khudoley, who was a friend of the Tokarev family, and the “Paganini Variationen“ (Paganini Variations) by Alexander Rosenblatt, born in Russia in 1955: a brilliant fantasy of the 24th Paganini Caprice for violin solos, peppered with elements of jazz.
